General Requirements

  • All students should follow: Published papers should use a full and official affiliation of the department and university.
  • in Chinese: 國立清華大學工程與系統科學系
  • in English: Department of Engineering and System Science, National Tsing Hua University

Advisor and Co-Advisor

  • The student should have an advisor or co-advisor from the Nano program faculty in Academia Sinica, and an advisor or co-advisor from the registered university department. The advisor/co-advisor in the department does not include joint-appointment professors.
  • Students must secure a thesis advisor by July 31 of the first year of Ph.D graduate study.

Qualification Examination

Ph.D. Candidate requirement

  • Requirement
    1. Fulfilled all courses and credits requirement for the Ph.D. graduate study
    2. Passed the PhD Qualification Examination
    3. Satisfied the English proficiency

    • Students should submit the application for the Ph.D. degree exam (the final oral defense) six months after becoming a Ph.D. Candidate.
    • Under a special circumstance, the exam could be held earlier by submitting the application, together with an explanation, to the Program Committee.

Dissertation Preliminary Examination

After passing PhD Qualification Examination, should be taken and passed the Doctoral Dissertation Preliminary Examination before the end of third year of Ph.D. graduate study.

Courses and Research Plan Form

Should be submitted before the beginning of second year of Ph.D. graduate study.

Application for Direct Pursuit of PhD Degree

Students admitted with a B.S. degree should apply for direct admission to PhD program at the end of the first year study.

Graduation (Thesis Defense) Application

      • Apply on-line at least 3 weeks prior to the thesis defense.
      • Submit the Thesis Similarity Report to ketioness.nthu.edu.tw for departmental review.
  • Documents for applying for the thesis defense

    • Submit the following documents in hard coty to the ESS Department Office at least 3 weeks before the thesis defense is held

    1. Department Thesis Defense Application Form (see above)
    2. NTHU Application Form for Ph.D. Degree Examination (printed from NTHU system)
    3. Official Transcript and Proof of English Proficiency
    4. Copies of Publications
    5. Thesis Abstract and Draft
    6. Committee Member List (1 copy/printed from NTHU system)
    7. Invitation for Members of Degree Examinatio Committee (printed from NTHU system)
    8. Review and Approval Letter from Examination Committee (1 copy/printed from NTHU system)
    9. Letter of Recommendation from the Thesis Advisor (1 copy/signed by the advisor/printed from NTHU system)
    10. Blank Thesis Defense Evaluation Form (equal to the number of committee members/printed from NTHU system)
    11. Application Form for First-Time Appointed Exam Committee Members
      • Required for members not listed in the NTHU system; CV and publication list must be attached.
  • Prior to the Defense

    • For in-person defenses, students should collect examination materials and honorarium receipts for committee members from the ESS Department Office one working day before the scheduled oral defense.

  • After completing the thesis defense
    1. Submit the signed Approval Form, a copy of the Advisor's Recommendation Letter, the original Thesis Defense Evaluation Form(s), and the original receipt for the oral defense honorarium to the ESS Department Office.
    2. When completing the graduation procedures, submit one hard copy of the final thesis and the signed the Thesis/Dissertation Affidavit to the ESS Department Office.
