Advisor and Co-Advisor
- The student should have an advisor or co-advisor from the Nano program faculty in Academia Sinica, and an advisor or co-advisor from the registered university department. The advisor/co-advisor in the department does not include joint-appointment professors.
- Students must secure a thesis advisor by July 31 of the first year of Ph.D graduate study.

Qualification Examination
- The PhD Qualification Examination should be taken and passed before the end of second year of Ph.D. graduate study.

Ph.D. Candidate requirement

- Students should submit the application for the Ph.D. degree exam (the final oral defense) six months after becoming a Ph.D. Candidate.
- Under a special circumstance, the exam could be held earlier by submitting the application, together with an explanation, to the Program Committee.
Dissertation Preliminary Examination
After passing PhD Qualification Examination, should be taken and passed the Doctoral Dissertation Preliminary Examination before the end of third year of Ph.D. graduate study.

Application for Direct Pursuit of PhD Degree
Students admitted with a B.S. degree should apply for direct admission to PhD program at the end of the first year study.

- Prior to the Defense
- After completing the thesis defense
- Submit the signed Approval Form, a copy of the Advisor's Recommendation Letter, the original Thesis Defense Evaluation Form(s), and the original receipt for the oral defense honorarium to the ESS Department Office.
- When completing the graduation procedures, submit one hard copy of the final thesis and the signed the Thesis/Dissertation Affidavit to the ESS Department Office.
Submit the following documents in hard coty to the ESS Department Office at least 3 weeks before the thesis defense is held
For in-person defenses, students should collect examination materials and honorarium receipts for committee members from the ESS Department Office one working day before the scheduled oral defense.
